Who We Are & What We Do
In 2016, Hattie saw a homeless man on a very cold day and asked where those without homes sleep. When her parents told her that people without homes often sleep outside, she got upset and offered to share her blankets with them. Her parents talked about what they could do to help facilitate her desire to help others. The family decided that a donation drive would be a great start. Hattie picked out some blankets on a shopping website and created a wish list. She set a goal to collect 20 blankets to deliver to a local homeless shelter and made a video asking friends and family to donate. Her parents wanted her to see that all it takes is one person to make a big difference, and that when you ask for help, you’ll be surprised to see how many people get involved!

Once the video was posted to social media, the most amazing thing happened. Blankets started arriving on her doorstep. Not just the ones she and her family bought, but blankets from other people too. And that initial goal Hattie had set was beaten – she ended up with nearly 50 blankets. Hattie and her parents nicknamed the stack of donations “Mount Blanket” and decided to make helping people who are experiencing homelessness a regular part of their lives.

Hattie has since expanded Mount Blanket from a seasonal donation drive to a year-round, global effort to provide needed items to homeless shelters and people experiencing homelessness. She and her Mom have helped connect kids with shelters in their communities so they could host their own Mount Blanket donation drives, and they have done public speaking engagements to share the Mount Blanket story.
